Are the Black Lines Around My Crowns Cavities?

Posted by Bruce J Grimaldi, DMD on Jun 26 2016, 10:56 AM

Many new patients often ask us about the black lines they sometimes see around their crowns, as they are concerned that these black lines are cavities around the crowns.  The good news, however, is that black line around crowns aren’t always cavities.

Black Lines and Older Metal Restorations

Sometimes black lines around crowns are caused by gum recession which allows you to see the metal that was used in many types of older restorations. And while metal-based crowns still have their place, Dr. Grimaldi has more esthetic options for you when you need a crown in the front.

All-Ceramic Crowns

These esthetic crowns have no metal and are often referred to as All-Ceramic Crowns. All-ceramic crowns are strong, lifelike, and durable – and since there is no metal you will never see a black line from metal around these types of crowns.
